Like all the hair in the human body, eyelashes are also made up of 10 percent water and 90 percent proteins. When eyelash hair is pulled out, or it drops, and then it needs about one to two months to be generated again. There are various diseases related to eyelashes also.

Here is a detailed description of some of the common eyelash disorders:

  1. Madrosis:

This condition is also referred to as Milphosis. It is the loss of eyelashes abnormally due to various reasons like inflammation, alopecia, drug reaction, toxin production, endocrine disorders, congenital disorders and application of wrong makeup, etc.

Any of these conditions may lead to the production of some diseases, and the most common of them is Madrosis.

  1. Blepharitis:

It is the inflammation of eyelids, leading to inflamed eyelashes. It is a chronic condition, caused due to infection of Staphylococcus, Herpes and fungus, etc. It can also be caused due to seborrhoea, mishandling (plucking, rubbing, using poor quality extensions) and allergy (Especially due to cosmetics).

  1. Trichiasis:

This condition is marked by the reverse growth of the lash hair such that the start turning towards the cornea of eyes, rather than aligning outwards. There are various causes of trichiasis like infections, inflammations and autoimmune disorders. In certain cases, congenital defects and trauma to the eyelids may also lead to Trichiasis.

  1. Demodex folliculorum:

These are a kind of parasites or face mites that live in the eyelash follicles. These mites eat the sebaceous gland secretions and the dead cells of the eyelids. They keep on reproducing inside the follicle. They have a length of about 0.1 to 0.4 mm, and due to this they can easily infest the eyelids.

  1. Crab lice:

Crab lice are parasitic insects that mainly infest the hairy regions of the body like pubic hairs and eyelashes. These parasites are known to feed on the human blood, and the removal of these crab lice is very difficult. It requires treatment by permethrin and pyrethrins to remove the lice accompanied by using fine teeth combs and continuous washing completely. The disease causes a lot of eyelash loss due to inflammation and irritation. Proper hygiene is necessary to avoid the occurrence of this disease.

  1. Stye:

‘Stye’ is the infection of the sebaceous gland. The inflammation is at the base of the eyelashes, and the infection is of the eyelid sweat gland. Due to the inflammation a red boil appear on the eyelid, that makes condition very irritating and painful. sometimes stye is accompanied by pus and watery discharge.  You may feel as if something is stuck in your eyes, swelling is a common thing. Although this condition is not chronic yet it may take about a week to disappear without any treatment. An antibiotic treatment can cure the condition in about four days.

  1. Trichotillomania:

It is a kind of mania, or psychological disorder in which a person who is suffering pulls out the hair from the own head, resulting in the loss of eyelashes and head hair loss. It is a very chronic condition and very difficult to deal.

  1. Trichophagia:

Out of the people suffering from trichotillomania, 15 % are suffering fromTrichophagia. It is a serious condition in which the person suffering from the problem has the habit of eating their hair. This psychological disorder is serious, and the problem can lead to complete loss of eyelashes and in some cases due to a lot of hair strands are eaten up the patient may also suffer from serious digestive problems.

One must remember to pay the same amount of attention to the lash hairs as one does with the head hair. Remember to keep them clean, to remove any eye makeup remains before bed and to avoid any mishandling with the eyelashes as it can cause eyelash trauma.
